World’s Oldest Twins at the age of 100 years and 10 Months

SISTERS Lily Millward and Ena Pugh have become the world’s oldest twins at the age of 100 years and 10 months.

The Welsh farmer’s daughters were born on January 4, 1910, before the outbreak of the First World War and when Queen Victoria’s son Edward VII was King.

The pair live in their own homes near Brecon, mid-Wales, and shun central heating. They travel by bus, meet up for weekly shopping trips, and chat on the phone almost every night.

Lily, who only gave up her aerobics classes a few months ago, said the secret of their long life is “laughter and having a joke with each other”.

She said: “We used to work on the farm all day, but we would enjoy ourselves. It was a lot of fun and sociable. We’ve been very lucky and have always had good health.”

Her daughter Dianne Powell, 64, said: “They have been very close all their lives and are still very close.”

The twins are the sole survivors of 10 children – including twin brothers.

Ena, whose railwayman husband Ivor died more than 20 years ago, has three children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lily, who lost her timber merchant husband Evan 20 years ago, has two children, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The family had no idea Lily and Ena were the world’s oldest twins until French sisters Raymonde and Lucienne Wattelade claimed the title at a mere 98 years and two months.

Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said: “By publicising the story of Raymonde and Lucienne, we’ve been inundated with more than a dozen new twins claiming to be older.

“Lily and Ena were the first to approach us with all the necessary evidence, so we are pleased to welcome them.”
