A twelve-year-old girl who has been dubbed the real-life Rapunzel after refusing to cut her hair for her whole life is to cut it all off - and plans the 5ft 2in mane of hair for £3,500 to be made into extensions.

Orda Cave: World's Longest Underwater Gypsum Cave in Russia

A team of daring cave divers working on Orda Cave Awareness Project have produced an incredible series of photos of the longest underwater gypsum crystal cave in the world. Located near Orda village in Perm region, Ural, Orda Cave is also the biggest underwater gypsum crystal cave in the world and second in Eurasia in terms of volumes of its galleries that stretch up to five kilometers.
Over a period of six months, famous underwater photographer, journalist and dive-instructor Victor Lyagushkin led the team of cave divers and took stunning images of the cave at less than zero degree temperature.
The location of the cave in Ural region, which is known for rich mineral deposits in Russia, may be linked to the gypsum content in Orda Cave, which has transparent water because of the mineral. The water is so clear divers can see over 50 yards ahead of them.

World Beard and Moustache Championships 2011

The World Beard and Moustache Championships is a biennial competition in which men with elaborate beards and moustaches compete with each other in 17 different official categories ranging from natural goatee and sideburns freestyle, Hungarian and Fu Manchu moustaches to Garibaldi and Imperial style beards. The event which began in 1990 has been running regularly since 1995. This year it was held in Trondheim in Norway on May 15.

Over one hundred and fifty contestants from 15 countries descended on the Prinsen Hotell in Trondheim, Norway this weekend to get down to the hairy business of who exactly has the world's best facial furniture. The coveted prize was taken by a German hairdresser Elmar Weisser, 47,  with his elaborate facial hair sculpture of a moose. It is the third time Mr Weisser has emerged as champion.

Longest Distance Travelled With A Fridge World Record set by Tony Hawks

Comedian Tony Hawks and his Lec fridge were officially awarded the Guinness World Records title for Longest Distance Travelled With A Fridge at the screening of the film about his ridiculous journey. The official distance travelled by Hawks is 1,025.26 miles. He hitchhiked round Ireland with the appliance after making a drunken bet with a mate.

The book of his adventure, Round Ireland with a Fridge was so well read that they made a film out of it, which is released this month on DVD. It's directed by Ed Bye and stars Tony Hawks, Ed Byrne, Sean Hughes, Valerie O'Connor, Josie Lawrence and Sara Crowe.

The fridge travels in many different cars, vans and lorries, is taken surfing, christened, blessed by nuns, accompanied by a bagpiper, taken to a bachelor festival and becomes the hero of a national radio station.

‘Hitching with a fridge teaches you to put your trust in the kindness of others and not to worry about the future, because as you soon realise when you're fridge-hiking, it's a pointless activity,’ says Hawks.

Amazing happenings-China traffic jam: 100 km long, 13 days old

Believe it or not: A traffic jam that's entered 13th day! Stretches 100km; may take as long as mid-Sept to clear.

Beijing: Baffled by the world's longest traffic jam, the Chinese government has mobilised hundreds of policemen to clear the 100-km long stretch of the Beijing-Tibet highway, riddled with vehicles for 13 days, with the pile-up almost reaching the outskirts of the capital. There have been no reports of road rage, and the main complaint has been about villagers on bicycles selling food and water at 10 times the normal price.

The snarl up on the highway, on a section that links the capital to the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia was triggered by road construction and repair. While all sorts of vehicles appeared to have been caught up in the jam, it was mostly caused by lengthy coal carrying trucks, which brings fuel for the industries around the capital.

Oarfish – The Sea Serpent of Ancient Times

Oarfish, also known as ribbonfish and king of herrings, is a deep water creature that can grow up to a size of 50 feet (15 meters) in length and weigh up to 600 pounds (272 kg). This deep sea creature is officially the longest bony fish living at a depth of between 66 feet and 1000 feet. It is known that when oarfish gets sick or is near to death it comes on the surface of the water and sometimes to the shore, that’s why we have ancient tales of seeing sea serpents coming out of the water surface. A 16 feet oarfish that was found on the shore of Bermuda beach in 1860 was described as sea serpent (image below). There are no scales on the fish and it’s not edible due to its gelatinous flesh.

World Longest Toy Train Track World Record set by IPSWICH

IPSWICH is set to become home to yet another world record after The Workshops Rail Museum successfully created the longest toy train track ever.

They are still waiting for official verification from the Guinness World Records, but it was all smiles trackside yesterday as a toy Thomas the Tank Engine train travelled around the 2km circuit.

Having the train travel the distance was essential for the record, and with Thomas crossing the finish line in just under three hours, the longest toy track title is in the bag.

A crowd of school groups and families were on hand to watch the record attempt launch, but those who missed out will have another chance to see it this Saturday.

The Workshops Rail Museum director Andrew Moritz said the idea for the record attempt came three months ago.

He said it was a great event for the kids but also a great way to have the museum showcased on the international stage on this, Thomas the Tank Engine’s 65th anniversary year.

India's Longest Digital Art Design in Limca Book of Record

The Great Story-Wall is a 100metre long banner on digital art, the design of which is based on myths, legends and indigenous stories of Eastern Himalayas. The feat is also setting a World Record( Limca Book of Records 2010) on the Tuesday at Paljor Namgyal Girls High School in Gangtok.

The Great Story Wall Project, however, isn’t only about creating a world record feat. It extends to a 6-month travel based storytelling tour (along with the banner) across various cities of the country beginning from Bangalore, the base of Acoustic Traditional ,continuing its journey to Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkatta, Delhi,Darjeeling,Shillong, Imphal, Itanagar that will also bring the support and involvement of various folklore-based organizations(NGO”s) ,government agencies and youth organizations of the city/state.said Salil Mukhia  designer and founder of Bangalore based NGO Acoustic Traditional.

World Longest Snake Dies in Ohio Zoo

An Ohio zoo said the longest snake living in captivity has died. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium said workers found the 24-foot python Wednesday morning dead from an apparent tumor. The snake, named Fluffy, held the Guinness World Record as the longest snake living in captivity. It was about as long as a moving van and as thick as a telephone pole. It weighed 300 pounds.

The 18-year-old reticulated python had drawn large crowds since the zoo got it in 2007.

Reticulated pythons are named for the cross-hatching patterns on their skin and average 10 to 20 feet long. The largest recorded one was 32 feet, 9 1/2 inches long when it was killed in 1912 in Indonesia.

Stewie - World's Longest Domestic Cat set Guinness World Record

A cat in Reno has broken the Guinness world record for world's longest domestic cat. The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that a 5-year-old Maine Coon named Stewie was certified as the new record holder after measuring 48 1/2 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail bone. That's a little more than 4 feet long.

The record was previously held by another Maine Coon that measured 48 inches.

Stewie's owners, Robin Hendrickson and Erik Brandsness, said they decided to try for the record after hearing countless people say they were amazed by Stewie's length.

Hendrickson said Maine Coons are known as "the gentle giants" of the cat world.

Switzerland Has Built the World's Longest Tunnel

Switzerland has built the longest in the world - 56.97 km - railway tunnel. Construction lasted 10 years. Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2017 will enable high-speed train travel between Germany and Italy, not crossing the Alps.

When the tunnel is put into operation, and its launch is scheduled for 2017, a trip along the route from Zurich - Lugano should be 100 minutes, from Zurich to Milan can be reached in 2 hours and 40 minutes, compared with the current nearly four hours. Speed trains in the tunnel would reach 250 km / h, and walk on it will be up to 300 express trains per day. World Longest Paintent Kurta World Record set by Manisha Ogale

A 40-feet high and 20-feet wide kurta painting made by Manisha Ogale of Thane -- which took a total of 29 hours, 25 minutes to complete -- is now being considered for the Limca Book of Records. Ogale's creation is being exhibited at the New English School from May 31-June 5 in Thane.
